Wireless earbuds buying guide

How to compare ANC, microphones, fit, latency, battery life and connectivity before buying wireless earbuds.

Fit comes before features

Earbuds that do not seal comfortably can sound thinner and reduce the effectiveness of active noise cancellation. Look for several ear-tip sizes and consider how long you normally wear earbuds. A secure but comfortable fit is especially important for commuting and calls.

ANC and transparency serve different jobs

Active noise cancellation is most useful against steady low-frequency sounds such as engines or air conditioning. Transparency or ambient mode does the opposite by allowing environmental sound through. Neither mode should be treated as hearing protection.

Microphone quality varies by environment

Call performance depends on microphone placement, signal processing and surrounding noise. A product that sounds clear indoors may have more difficulty outdoors in wind. If calls are your priority, look for clear information about microphone design rather than relying only on speaker specifications.

Battery figures are estimates

Battery life changes with volume, ANC use, codec, call time and temperature. Charging-case figures usually combine several recharges. Compare the earbuds' single-charge estimate separately from the total case estimate.

Check controls and compatibility

Touch controls, multipoint pairing, companion apps and low-latency modes can affect daily convenience. Confirm that important app features work on your phone platform before you buy.

Before ordering: Always compare this general guidance with the current specifications on the product page and your device manufacturer's compatibility information.
